Official Candidates List for MCK By-Election

Electoral Officer Angus L. Montour announced the Official Candidates List this afternoon for the October 19th MCK By-Election via Facebook Live on the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake page. Five (5) community members will run for one position as Elected Council Chief on the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke. They are listed below in alphabetical order.

All Nominees were vetted through a vigorous background check conducted by the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, the Court of Kahnawà:ke, and the Office of the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Registry and they have accepted their nominations and were deemed by the Electoral Officer to have met all eligibility criteria as per the Kahnawà:ke Election Law.

Some important dates to remember:

  • The MCK By-Election takes place on Saturday, October 19, 2019, from 9am to 3pm at the Karonhianónhnha School Gymnasium
  • An Advanced Poll for those registered takes place on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the Golden Age Club
  • Meet the Candidates Night takes place tonight (Wednesday, October 9) at the Golden Age Club

 

Unofficial Nominees List for MCK By-Election

October 5, 2019

Nominations for Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) Elected Council Chief were collected by Electoral Officer Angus L. Montour and Assistant Electoral Officer Muriel White-Rice at the Kahnawake Services Complex on Saturday, October 5, 2019 between 10am and 12 noon.

The Unofficial Nomination List was distributed shortly after 12pm by the Electoral Officer via Facebook live on the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake page. Seven (7) community members were nominated for the one position open for Elected Council Chief.

All Nominees on the Unofficial List will be vetted through a vigorous background check conducted by the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, the Court of Kahnawà:ke and the Membership Department.

For all Nominees, the deadline to Declare or Decline their Nomination is Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 12 noon.

It is noted that this list is UNOFFICIAL until all Nominees have dutifully accepted or declined their nominations and have been deemed by the Electoral Officer to have met all eligibility critiera as per the Kahnawà:ke Election Law. The Official Candidate List will be released by Tuesday, October 8, 2019 between 2pm and 5pm.

MCK By-Election - Nomination Day this Saturday

The Electoral Officer for the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke By-Election wishes to remind Kahnawa’kehró:non that Saturday, October 5th is Nomination Day. The Electoral Officer will collect nominations at the Kahnawà:ke Services Complex Lobby from 10am to 12 noon.

Those who intend to run are strongly encouraged to pre-verify their eligibility with the Office of the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry and arrive with their nominator and seconder (both of whom must be at least 18 years of age and meet the requirements of the Kahnawà:ke Election Law), as a trio, to expedite the registration process.

The Electoral Officer would also like to emphasize the importance of having all documents acquired that day be completed in FULL to avoid delay.  All Nominees will have a photo taken.

By-Election called, Electoral Officer named

September 24, 2019

The Executive Office of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the Community that a By-Election has been called for the position of one (1) Ratsénhaienhs (also known as an Elected Council Chief) due to the recent resignation of Carl Horn. By process, a By-Election is required pursuant to section 34.1 of the Kahnawà:ke Election Law.

The mandate of Angus L. Montour as Electoral Officer, along with that of Muriel White-Rice as the Assistant Electoral Officer, has been re-initiated for the upcoming By-Election

Mr. Montour and Ms. White-Rice conducted the 2018 General Election, as well as the By-Election in February of this year.

Further details regarding Nominations, ‘Meet the Candidates Night’ and Election Dates will be announced shortly from the Office of the Electoral Officer.

Dates Announced for By-Election

The Office of the Electoral Officer (EO) is pleased to announce several important dates for the 2019 Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke By-Election.

  • Nomination Day – Saturday, February 9, 10am to noon at the Kahnawà:ke Services Complex (those who intend to run should pre-verify their eligibility with the Membership Department)
  • Special Advanced Poll – Saturday, February 16, 10am to noon at the Golden Age Club (Letters of intent should be submitted to the EO by Monday, February 11 at noon)
  • Meet the Candidates Night – Wednesday, February 20, beginning at 7pm at the Golden Age Club
  • Election Day – Saturday, February 23; Polls open 9am to 6 pm at Karonhianónhnha Tsi Ionterihwaienstáhkhwa School

The Electoral Officer requests that each Nominee, Nominator, and Seconder sign all documents as a trio to avoid unnecessary delay, confusion or complication. Band Cards and other I.D. on person may assist in expedited registration completion.
